"Beyond the Farthest Star." Animated Series episode #4. Written by Samuel A. Peeples. Directed by Hal Sutherland. Stardate 5221.3. First aired in 1973. Kirk and crew beam aboard a huge derelict starship from an alien race, and learn that the ship's crew self-destructed rather than carry a still-living malevolent entity to other worlds. This was the first episode of Star Trek: The Animated Series to be aired during the original network run of the show. It premiered on September 8, 1973, seven years to the day after the Star Trek: The Original Series, "The Man Trap." premiered. It was however not transmitted in Los Angeles until December 22, 1973 because George Takei was running for mayor in early September. GUEST CAST: James Doohan as Kyle, Mr., Science technician, Pod ship commander and voice of malignant alien. Arex, Lieutenant. Seen but not heard until One of Our Planets Is Missing.

auxiliary control. The auxiliary control is installed when Kirk disables the warp drive controls.

bridge defence system, automatic. The automatic bridge defence system is deployed when Spock realises the malignant alien has entered the ship's systems.

cutter beams. Kirk orders an engineer to use the cutter beams to remove the cover of the warp drive when Scott is trapped by it.

Enterprise, U.S.S.. Just before the malignant alien abandons Enterprise for exile on the dead star.

hyper-gravity. Spock can only describe the force that is dragging them towards a negative star mass as hyper-gravity.

Kirk, James T.. Kirk puts his life support over the warp drive control for the malignant alien to target.

Kyle, Mr.. Kyle is at the transporter controls when the landing party beams back from the Pod ship.

life support belt. The landing party are wearing life support belts to beam over to the alien ship.

low frequency shield. Kirk asks Spock if he can erect a low frequency shield around the navigation console.

malignant alien. The malignant alien transports back to the Enterprise from the Pod ship with the landing party.

Milky Way Galaxy. The Enterprise leaves the farthest star in the Milky Way Galaxy, starcharting.

Pod ship commander. The Pod ship commander on the screen of the Pod ship computer gives the landing party a warning about the malignant alien.

Pod ship. The Enterprise approaches the pod ship.

Questar M-17. Kirk in the Captain's log states the mission is towards Questar M-17.

Scott, Montgomery. Scott is trapped in the cover of the warp core in Engineering.

slingshot effect. The Enterprise leaves the orbit of the dead star using the slingshot effect when released from the control of the malignant alien.

Spock. Spock says he can compute the slingshot effect without the ship's computers.

Sulu, Hikaru. Sulu tells Kirk that the coordinates given by the malignant alien are the centre of the Milky Way Galaxy.
